The programmes offered in the Department are designed to provide knowledge and experience in the pure and applied sciences of mathematics, physics and engineering. Beyond this, the Department seeks to inculcate in its students Christian values of excellence, moral soundness and professional ethics. These, along with the theories and applications of logic, creative thinking, problem-solving and effective communication skills will fit the students for service in all branches of science, business and the humanities. The Department provides the mathematical knowledge and skills that are required by students in most departments of the University. The math programmes offers an Actuarial Science concentration as well as a general degree in math.

Entry Requirements

Students, who have passed Mathematics at CXC or GCE O’Level or have passed equivalent examinations, may begin their mathematical courses by registering for College Algebra or Fundamentals of Mathematics according to the requirements of their programme of study. Students who plan to go on to higher-level math courses should do College Algebra.

Students who have not passed mathematics at CXC/GCE level are required to do Introductory Mathematics (MATH 095), which satisfies the requirements for entry to College Algebra or Fundamentals of Mathematics.

Programmes Offered

Mathematics            Engineering Matriculation Requirements
  • In the case of any deficiencies in the matriculation requirements stated below, applicants must enroll in the Pre-College Department of the University to prepare to take external examinations.

  • Applicants transferring from tertiary institutions or having good passes in appropriate subjects in GCE (‘AO’ or ‘A’ levels) and CAPE may (upon transcript evaluation), receive credits for work done.

Mathematics

    1. In addition to meeting all other University requirements as stated in the ‘Admissions’ section of the current Bulletin, all applicants, at a minimum, must have passes in five (5) CXC or GCE subjects, including English Language and Mathematics (CXC General Proficiency level I, II or III/G.C.E. at grade A, B, or C), a satisfactory score in SAT I (outside this region) or equivalent.

Engineering

To complete the Associate Degree Programme in the stated time (2 years), students must enter with following minimum matriculation requirements:

    i) GCE A’ Level Mathematics & Physics, PLUS a minimum standard of CXC/GCE O’ Level Passes in English Language, and two other technical or science related subjects OR

ii) CAPE Mathematics Units I & II,CAPE Physics Units I & II, , PLUS a minimum standard of CXC/GCE O’ Level Passes in English Language, and two other technical or science related subjects

iii) Students who DO NOT satisfy the above (2) requirements (Students without A Level or CAPE Passes) will complete their study in 3 years or more, with the first year being used to complete preliminary courses which are prerequisites for the programme. The minimum entry requirements for such students are: CXC/GCE O Level Mathematics, Physics, English, and two other science related subjects (preferably technical)

COURSE EXEMPTIONS
    • For a student to be awarded credits for College Algebra, a student must have previously passed College Algebra (MATH121), with a grade C or better. Credits in College Algebra are not applicable towards the bachelor’s or associate’s degree in Mathematics.

    • Students must obtain a minimum pass of 3 in CXC or “C” in GCE Physics to be exempted from Introduction to Physics I & II (PHYS 101 & 102). Credits in Introduction to Physics I & II (PHYS 101 & 102) are not applicable in credit count towards the any bachelor’s or associate’s degree within the department.

Minor (bachelor degree programmes only)

  • Students may select any minor offered by the University.
  • Students must have external passes in the minor selected.
