INTRODUCTION
The members of
the Department of Biology and Chemistry believe that knowledge of
life in all its varied forms and functions contributes to one’s
mental, social and spiritual health. The Department’s goal is to
provide the church and the world with workers who understand the
processes of life and are dedicated to its preservation.
OBJECTIVES
The Department’s
curriculum is designed to:

Give students
a basic education in biology/chemistry.
-
Prepare
students for entrance into a medical, dental, paramedical or
graduate school.

Train biology
teachers for secondary schools.
-
Prepare
persons for employment in laboratory facilities (industrial,
governmental and medical).
PROGRAMMES OFFERED
DURATION
The
normal completion time for full-time students (16 credit hours per
semester, and 6-9 per summer) to complete a Bachelors degree in the
Department of Biology and Chemistry is four years. Students are
expected to take a minimum of One Hundred and Twenty-Eight (128)
credits for the degree. However, trained applicants, with
transferable credits, may take less than 4 years of full-time study
(16 credit hour per semester) to complete their programmes.
MATRICULATION
REQUIREMENTS
In addition to
the general requirements for entry into the University, applicants
must have CXC/GCE O’level passes(General 1, 2 or A, B, C) in
English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and one (1) other
subject. Students will be matriculated into the Department after
successfully completing BIOL 155, 156, or CHEM 121, 122, with no
grade lower than “C”.
GRADUATION
REQUIREMENTS
In addition to
the stated requirements, all students pursuing the Bachelors degree
in Biology, Biology Education, and Biochemistry are required to
conduct an independent research and present findings for
evaluation. The students are also required to pass an oral language
and content examination.
